Labor Day White Mountain Camping Trip

Midstate Trail Hike Series #8

Date: 09/05/2010

Meet at 12:00pm, trail crossing at junction of Route 62 and Ball Hill Road in Princeton. From the Worcester area, follow Route 31N out of Holden. After the Princeton town line, turn left onto Ball Hill Road and follow to the end. From the Boston area, travel west on Route 2 to Fitchburg, then south on Route 31. Continue on Route 31 to Princeton Center, then west on Route 62 for 2.3 miles to Ball Hill Rd. Leave some cars and drive to parking lot of Wachusett Mountain Ski Area. Hike south over the mountain and through Wachusett Meadows Audubon Preserve, 6.2 miles.

Meet at 9:00am, Barre Falls Dam. From Route 68, take Route 62W for 2.2 miles. Turn left on entrance road and park in the first lot on the left, just before dam. Leave most cars and shuttle back down to the corner of Route 62 and Ball Hill Road in Princeton. Those who want a shorter [4+ mile] alternative may leave their car at the corner of Route 68 and Intervale Road. Hike south 8.5 miles over back roads and through Ware River watershed.

Opposite Ragsdale Chevrolet, turn right onto Paxton Road and continue for 1.4 miles. Turn left on Gold Nugget Road and travel 0.6 miles, then turn right on McCormack Road to go 1.9 miles to the parking lot on the left. Leave some cars here and shuttle to East Hill Road off Pleasantdale Road, Rutland. Hike south 5.2 miles through Treasure Valley and around Thompson Pond.

Turn right on Capon Road and travel 0.4 miles to the end. Park on the corner. From Route 9, take Route 31S and turn left on East Charlton Road to the corner of Capen Road. Leave some cars here and shuttle to Route 9 at Spencer Country Inn. Walk south by Audubon land and horse farms, for 5.3 miles, back to G.H. Wilson Road. Plan on sticking around for lunch, as a post-hike get-together and cookout is being provided at the Green Mountain Club camp (on Cedar Meadow Lake, off of Rawson Street in Leicester).

Meet 9:00am, where the trail crosses Route 20 in Charlton. From the intersection with Route 56, head west on Route 20 for 3 miles. Turn left at the traffic light onto Worcester Road across from AutoCenter (the big tan building on the right). Go up the road and bear left past the trail crossing, and park around the cul-de-sac. Leave some cars here and drive to the parking turn-off on East Charlton Road off of Route 31. From here, hike south 6.4 miles, ending with a walk through a cow tunnel under Route 20.

Midstate Trail Hike Series #18

Date: 11/13/2010

Meet at 9:00am, Rhode Island side of Wallum Lake. I-395 Exit 2 onto Route 16, then head east on Route 16 for 5.2 miles to the main entrance to Wallum Lake on the right (from the east, take Route 146, head west on Route 16 past East Douglas, and look for Wallum Lake entrance on left). This is Cedar Street, which later becomes Wallum Lake Road, and eventually Route 100. Follow Cedar Street/Wallum Lake Road for 4 miles to the second stop sign, and take a right. Continue another 2.1 miles to the first driveable right after Zamora Hospital. Go 0.1 miles, turn right onto Buck Hill Road, then travel 1.2 miles until Buck Hill Tower is on left. Park directly opposite of the tower on the right. Leave some cars and shuttle to Route 16 in Douglas, where Midstate crosses the road. Walk south through Douglas State Forest past the RI border, about 9 miles total.
